This Volunteering started on 16.02.21 and carried on for around 14 weeks.
I started to volunteer for Marie Curie in February 2021 and I was asked to plan new fundraiser ideas that would aim to involve a younger target audience in their fundraising. The usual target audience for Marie Curie is females over the age of 40, and I was given the task to generate new ideas that would interest a younger generation. I not only had meetings with their Fundraising Volunteer Development Manager, but also worked independently to research different fundraisers they have already done, and to develop ideas of my own.
I completed independent research into what makes a good online event or fundraiser, and also how other charities had used new technology and social media platforms, such as tik tok, to fundraise. I then selected two ideas and planned them in further detail.
Time Management
Having this role within Marie
Curie helped me to improve my time management skills, as i had to balance
this role with my University time table and work. I had to make sure i had enough time each week to complete the tasks that were set and also stick to the scheduled meeting times, set by my mentor. Time management
is always a vital skill to have and I believe this skill has been improved
by working with Marie Curie.
Adaptability
Graduate Attribute table REF
I have never planned any fundraising activities for a large charity before
and so it took a lot of adapting to enable me to work to the standards of such a well known non-profit. I belive that I adapted very well to this position within the charity and produced ideas and work of
high quality, as well as having
confidence when meeting with
employees.
Enterprise
Graduate Attribute table REF
Enterprise is seeking opportunities
and challenges. I decided to do work experience with Marie Curie because I knew the amazing work they do and how it would tremendously help me to develop a range of skills. I have thought of new and interesting fundraising ideas for
the charity to possibly run in the future. I was pro active in
finding this opportunity.
Sarah Phillips-Lord, Fundraising Volunteer Development Manager
Frankie has been a pleasure to work with over the last few months. We are currently trying to explore how we can work more effectively with Universities students to raise funds and awareness for the charity and as part of this tasked Frankie with developing a couple of event ideas that we could potentially use. Frankie broke the task down into really easy segments, following what she had learnt on her course and gave input into the tasks that she was able to do based on her learning so far. Frankie always communicated with me as her key contact on time, ensuring I was kept up to date on activities completed. Frankie presented her ideas to myself and another colleague in a very professional manner, using technology effectively. Frankie has developed two ideas for the charity, based on external and internal research and also her knowledge of the University Audience. Frankie answered questions after the presentation really well, which also provided further useful insight. We had informed Frankie at the start of the project that we may not take her ideas forward but would consider all put forward, however the ideas that Frankie has provided are fantastic and we are definitely going to use them to help develop our package of ideas for working with Universities. It has been a pleasure to work with Frankie and I have offered that if she is looking for any further experience she would always be welcome.
This Marketing session took place on 19.03.21
When I started volunteering with Marie Curie, one of the tasks they proposed for me to complete was to plan the marketing for fundraisers, however, after explaining to them that I was not very confident with marketing, my mentor set up a personal one-to-one meeting with the Fundraising Events & Campaigns Co-ordinator for Marie Curie.
In the meeting I learnt a lot about different types of marketing, such as above and below the line marketing. I was also told about the various marketing strategies that Marie Curie uses, such as having corporate partnerships, as this not only can raise money but also increases awareness.
I found this meeting very useful in developing my marketing skills as I now know many different strategies that can be adapted to, not only other charities, but also other events.
Marketing
Marketing is a very useful
skill to have in any industry. This meeting enabled me to become more confident with creating a marketing strategy, which I am sure will prove very helpful in my carreer. I learnt many different ways of marketing different types of events and fundraisers, and discovered which ways of marketing usually work best for various
events.
